ZeroGate 4.0 – How to Set as Your Default Search Engine
ZeroGate 4.0 is a private, surveillance‑free search engine. Browsers do not automatically detect it, so you must add it manually.
This page explains how to add ZeroGate 4.0 as your default search engine in:

1. Google Chrome
Step 1 – Open Search Engine Settings
- Click the three dots in the top‑right corner of Chrome.
- Click Settings.
- Click Search engine in the left sidebar.
- Click Manage search engines and site search.
Step 2 – Add ZeroGate 4.0
- Scroll down to the Site search section.
- Click the Add button.
- Fill in the fields as follows:
Name: ZeroGate 4.0
Shortcut: zg
URL with %s in place of query: https://zerogate40.pages.dev/?q=%s
(You may use https://zerogate40noturnstile.pages.dev/?q=%s instead.)
Step 3 – Make ZeroGate the Default
- Find ZeroGate 4.0 in the Site search list.
- Click the three dots next to it.
- Click Make default.
Chrome will now send all address‑bar searches to ZeroGate 4.0.
2. Microsoft Edge
Step 1 – Open Search Settings
- Click the three dots in the top‑right corner of Edge.
- Click Settings.
- Click Privacy, search, and services.
- Scroll down to the Address bar and search section.
- Click Manage search engines.
Step 2 – Add ZeroGate 4.0
- Click the Add button.
- Fill in the fields as follows:
Name: ZeroGate 4.0
Keyword: zg

Step 3 – Set ZeroGate as Default
- Find ZeroGate 4.0 in the list.
- Click the three dots next to it.
- Click Set as default.
Edge will now use ZeroGate 4.0 for address‑bar searches.
3. Mozilla Firefox
Firefox does not automatically detect ZeroGate 4.0, but you can still add it.
Option A – Add as a Search Shortcut (Simple)
Step 1 – Open Firefox Search Settings
- Open the Firefox menu (three lines in the top‑right corner).
- Click Settings.
- Click Search in the left sidebar.
Step 2 – Add ZeroGate 4.0 as a Shortcut
- Scroll down to the Search Shortcuts section.
- Click Add.
- Fill in the fields as follows:
Name: ZeroGate 4.0
Keyword: zg

Now you can search from the address bar by typing:
zg your query here
Firefox will send that query to ZeroGate 4.0.
Option B – Add as a Full Default Engine (Advanced)
If you want ZeroGate 4.0 to appear in Firefox’s Default Search Engine dropdown, you must host an OpenSearch XML file.
Step 1 – Create an OpenSearch XML File
Create a file named:
opensearch.xml
Put the following contents in it:

Step 2 – Host the File
Upload this file to your ZeroGate site so it is available at:
https://zerogate40.pages.dev/opensearch.xml
Step 3 – Add It in Firefox
- Open Firefox and visit
https://zerogate40.pages.dev/opensearch.xml.
- Firefox should show an option or banner to add “ZeroGate 4.0” as a search engine.
- Click Add.
- Go to Settings → Search and set ZeroGate 4.0 as the default search engine.
4. Notes
- You can use either
https://zerogate40.pages.dev or https://zerogate40noturnstile.pages.dev in the URLs above.
- The
?q=%s part is required by browsers so they know where to insert your query.
- Once configured, all your address‑bar searches will go through ZeroGate 4.0 instead of the default big‑tech engines.
